Inspiration from the Emmy’s

Source: http://greenweddingshoes.blogspot.com

Yesterday I was watching the Emmy Red Carpet Show – the best part in my opinion! I love seeing what everyone is wearing, their hair, makeup, jewelry – love it. And it’s a great place to get idea for your wedding day :) My favorite dress of the evening was Mila Kunis. She wore a tea-length dress by Monique Lhuillier. Someone described it as ” vintage ballerina-chic.” Love it. And the shoes! So perfect and very different from everyone else. Some of my other favorites are below.

Love the way these dresses flow. Leighton Meester looked like a Greek deity in her layered Bottega Veneta gown. I love Lindsay Price’s shade of plum and Kate Walsh’s gorgeous gray J.Mendel Grecian-inspired gown. The detail in the draping with the sweetheart bustline — so romantic!

Some of my favorite hair and make-up looks. Love Jennifer Love Hewitt’s hair – hippie chic at it’s best!

Coordinate Your Bar!

One of the things I love doing is bringing the design of my dessert table to the bar. Often I take custom paper that I use for the dessert table and create custom bartender trays. I’ve been a fan of Dabney Lee’s gorgeous lucite tray collection for some time now. I recently saw that Dabney has added ice buckets to her collection. You can view all of her lovely designs here. Not only are her products a lovely way to infuse design into the bar area, but they also make lovely wedding or housewarming gifts. Check out some of her patterns below. Her designs are so lovely that it is tempting to create a whole dessert bar from one of her patterns!

Idea We Love: DIY Photo Station

091709PhotoStation

What a clever idea that Hillary Burgess shared on the bridescafe.com. Such a great way to add some character to your big day with a little vintage charm. Aand not only do guests get some great shots to take home but they get a photo lesson too! (Extra points for a smart idea!) Think that propping this type of set-up is close to impossible? It’s really not! Check out ebay, etsy, craigslist or even your grandma’s attic. Trust us, you’ll never know what you’ll find or what people in your family hold onto that you can use for your wedding!

Real North Carolina Wedding: Sarah + Kevin, Part I

Source: http://www.swsmag.net/blog/2009/9/15/real-north-carolina-wedding-sarah-kevin-part-i.html

Sometimes the bride really does know her own wedding best, and Sarah’s description of her North Carolina wedding as a truly “enchanted” affair is spot on the money!   Special thanks to Dixie Pixel Photo for sharing this magical wedding with us.  Indeed, the couple’s twilight nuptials in a secluded forest at The Garden Retreat (complete with flickering lanterns, hanging dragonflies and a vintage Claire Pettibone gown) were fairytale perfect.  The hopeless romantic in all of us here at SW loves how the bridesmaids, in flowy moss green dresses from Melissa Sweet, and the flower girls in hair wreathes from Blooms at Biltmore Park call to mind the wood nymphs and fairy princesses from our favorite childhood stories.  Want to hear more about this international couple’s happily-ever-after ending?  Check back to see how Sarah, a North Carolina native, and Kevin, a New Zealand national, who met while living abroad in London, celebrated wedded bliss with their closest friends and family!

How did the two of you meet?  Tell us your story. I had just moved to London from Tennessee and Kevin had just moved to London from New Zealand. Coincidentally, we both were planning trips to Spain. We found each other and decided to go to Barcelona together and had a great time exploring Spain. Once back in London, we bonded over conversations about missing our dogs, adjusting to British life and loving hot chocolate.  After four years of falling more and more in love, we got engaged!
Three adjectives that describe the day are:
Enchanted, emotional and fun.
What was the design inspiration for your wedding invitation?
To give our guests a taste of our vintage forest wedding, the invitation was shaped like an antique locket. On the front of the gold locket was a cardinal and a kiwi to represent where Kevin and I are from. The locket opened to reveal an evening forest scene along with all the wedding details our guests needed.
Tell us about finding your wedding dress:
I knew I wanted a dress that would have a vintage style to fit in with our forest destination wedding.  I came across Claire Pettibone’s dresses and fell in love with the designer.  I had a hard time making up my mind because all of her designs were gorgeous . In the end, I decided “Helena” was perfect and I was even lucky enough to find it at a sample sale at Kelly’s Closet in Atlanta.
What was your most memorable moment about your wedding day?
The most memorable moment was standing with Kevin at the ceremony in the beautiful forest surrounded by the people who love us best.

Khloe Kardashian Talking Marriage After Only Dating for A Few Weeks

Source: http://www.celebrityweddingbuzz.com/celebrity_weddings/2009/09/khloe-kardashian-talking-marriage-after-only-dating-for-a-few-weeks.html

ILLO_Hollywood_Rumor_Mill_NEWIn what the heck news, rumor has it that reality TV star Khloe Kardashian (Keeping Up With the Kardashians and Kourtney and Khloe Take Miami) has marriage on her menu. Normally this is the part we would be really happy for her and start thinking about what her wedding style might be, but right now we’re thinking she may want to slow down a little here. Kardashian has only been dating NBA star Lamar Odom for a few months now, and just recently confirmed they were even an item, reports E! News Online.

“They instantly hit it off,” a source told E!. “It’s like they’ve known each other for years.”

But yet, they haven’t actually known each other even half that long. The pair met through mutual friends this summer. No word yet on the rumor from his camp or hers, but it sounds to us like Miss Kardashian may be trying to pull a Jessica Simpson move, leaking ring-hints to the press – and we all know how that ended up. Are they rushing things? There aren’t many engagement etiquette rules to go on here, so we want to hear what you think?
Should Khloe Kardashian be talking marriage after a few months of dating?(trends)

Honey-Glazed Beehive Cake

Tonight at sundown marks the beginning of Rosh Hashana, the Jewish New Year. On Rosh Hashana, one of the many traditions is to dip apples and round challah in honey as we ask for a sweet New Year. Honey is used for many desserts during Rosh Hashana and I have been eyeing this Martha Stewart honey-glazed beehive cake for some time now. I am going to attempt to make this today for my family. This cake has yellow and black marzipan bumblebees to add extra charm. You can follow instructions on how to make marizpan bees here by simply adhering tinted marzipan to sliced almonds.

If you are not feeling so ambitious, you can order marzipan bumblebees from Marzipan World, a great source for a variety of shaped marzipan.

I hope this honey cake will be symbolic of the upcoming sweet year!

Wedding Day Makeup – Fresh All Day Long

RSS Source: Wedding News – Bridezilla.com

dreamstime_10035458WEDDING MAKEUP

A wedding brings so many things to think about; wedding day makeup being just one of them.  The problem is that many brides do not think about this part of their big day until they are either having their wedding day makeup applied, or are applying that last touch of mascara in the limo on the way to the church!  Keep yourself from any stress by following some wedding day makeup tips and tricks.

Some brides choose to hire a makeup artist to apply their wedding day makeup.  This is a great idea because a professional will know how to apply makeup for pictures; something a non-professional may not be able to do.  Your wedding day is but one day out of your life, but it will be memorialized in pictures forever.  Having makeup that shines or produces a less than healthy hue in pictures will leave you feeling unsatisfied and downright sad.

Because you want to be sure about your wedding day makeup, have some fun before the wedding by playing with some different looks.  Have makeup applied by your makeup artist, or do it yourself if that is the route you are going to go, and then take pictures.  This will show you how your makeup will show up on film.

Once the big day arrives, there are ways to ensure that your wedding day makeup will withstand the long day.  The first thing is to make sure you are applying quality products.  Yay!  A chance to splurge on makeup!  Wedding day makeup requires certain things in order for you to look your absolute best all day long:

  • A good concealer is necessary to hide any blemishes and should be applied first.
  • Yellow toned foundation is necessary to offset pink tones that will come out in flash photographs.  Typical red areas are around the nose and mouth, so start applying there and work your way out.
  • Once concealer and foundation have been applied, set it with a sheer finish loose powder.  This keeps your skin looking flawless all day and keeps skin from looking shiny in pictures.
  • Using two shades of blush for all day glow is the best way to go.  A neutral shade on the apples of cheeks goes on first and then gets blended up into the hairline as well as downwards for softness.  Once that shade is on, apply a brighter shade over the neutral just on the apples of the cheeks.
  • For long lasting wedding day lips that will even make it through that all-important first kiss as husband and wife, do more than just line lips with a pencil; fill in the entire lip and then cover with lipstick.
  • Because tears can be a part of your wedding day, using water-resistant eyeliner is a must.  If the look you want calls for lining the eye with shadow, consider using a water-resistant liquid liner covered then by shadow applied with a damp eye liner brush.  Of course, this is crowned with water-resistant mascara.
  • Even when applied to perfection, a wedding day can cause issues with your wedding day makeup. For this reason, every bride should be equipped with her very own makeup touch-up kit.  This should include concealer, pressed powder, lip liner, lipstick or gloss, and tissues.  Keep these nearby and you’ll be ready for anything.

Maids and colors and styles, oh my!

Source: http://www.dcnearlyweds.com/2009/09/maids-and-colors-and-styles-oh-my.html

Thus far in my wedding planning, bridesmaids’ attire has been at the bottom of my list, something I didn’t want to think about or deal with. Honestly, I just didn’t care what they wore, as long as it was attractive/pretty and wedding-appropriate. I told my sister/MOH to take the reins and to leave me mostly out of it. And, as she is much more of a fashionista than I, she kindly obliged. We discussed finding dresses off-the-rack, as my sister refused to wear/buy a hideous bridesmaid dress (she was in a wedding for which the dresses were so bad that she threw hers out in an airport trashcan on her way home!).
I’m not really a fan of traditional BM attire, where all the maids where the same dress in the same color. For me, that’s just too formal/posed, and of course, different styles fit different bodies. I was inspired by Miss Powder Puff’s maids, who all wore different dresses in coordinating colors:

(photo from her photog, Shutter Sam)
My sister spent an August weekend at the beach outside of Charleston, SC, and she went shopping on King Street one day where she popped into LulaKate, a small boutique that carries its own line of BM and ready-to-wear attire. And she loved the BM dresses! LulaKate has about 20 styles (3 skirt styles – A-line, full, and party, in a few lengths; a dozen or more bodice styles) and dozens of colors in 3 different fabrics. So over Labor Day weekend, when I was at the beach, I stopped by LulaKate too. And I’m relieved/excited to say that I found my BM dresses! I’m still going to have different colors/styles, but all in silk dupioni fabric and complementary/similar colors:

(images from LulaKate’s website and compiled by me in PowerPoint)
Unfortunately, the colors on the website are not nearly as bright or vibrant as the fabric swatches, so the image makes my dresses look a little bland, but hopefully you all get the idea. I’ve chosen a bunch of colors that all look good together, so each maid can wear a different color in her style of choice, and no one has to get stuck with last pick (I have more colors than maids). My plan is to ask the girls to rank the colors in order of preference, and hopefully I can assign the colors so everyone is happy and gets first or second choice. At least, that’s the plan … and according to the Fashion Queen (my sister) the dresses are very re-wearable. Coming from her, that’s saying something.
The only LulaKate location is in Charleston, but the dresses are carried by Bella Bridesmaid shops (there’s one in Baltimore if any DC brides want to check out LulaKate), and there’s a Bella Bridesmaid shop in the home city of most of my Bridesmaid (not the one in Benin, but that’s a story for another time).
Are any of you opting for non-traditional BM dresses? How are you going about it?

How to Pick the Coolest Beach Wedding Invitations

Wedding News from BridezillaTimes.com

With the scenic blue sky and enticing ocean as your backdrop, the fun little charms and treasures on the beach as the souvenirs, and nature’s beauty as decoration, a beach wedding can truly be one awe-inspiring event. Just one more thing you need to get this event started, and that is the invitation.

The wedding invitation is an essential part of this occasion because it gives the guests preview about your wedding as well as provides relevant details such as date, venue, and theme. But just because it is “important,” it does not mean it has to be serious! If you are going to have a beach wedding, you would want something that would be fun, bright, and cool. These tips will help you pick the nicest beach wedding invitation for your special day.

  • Pick a theme

The vast wealth of options you have when it comes to beach weddings can surely be overwhelming. Having a specific theme would help you narrow down your choices. Some of the themes you can choose include treasure hunt, tropical, Hawaiian, and nautical.

  • Choose the colors

The wedding motif color should be your guide when picking colors for the invitation. Popular choices for colors include blue, white, off-white, beige, green, brown, yellow, orange, and pink. Choose one color for the base of the invitation (preferably light shade like white, off-white or beige) and another one or two colors for the accent (blue and green, pink and brown, or yellow and orange).

  • Decide on the wording

It would be fun to break away from the traditional invitation wording and make use of beach phrases to inform the guests about your big day. Something like, “Come and bask under the warmth of the sun while we tie the knot…” or “Enjoy the sun, sand and the sea as Mike and Wendi unite as one…” would be a good way to start the invitation wording.

  • Select something out of the ordinary

Before, invitation meant paper and envelop but today, it can be anything from handcrafted items to accessories. If you want your beach wedding to stand out, it would be a great idea to choose a non-traditional invitation. Look at the list of options below and see if something fits your and your partner’s taste and style.

the ’80s were kinder than this, weren’t they?

Source: http://feedproxy.google.com/~r/PerfectBound/~3/pvGkMZeJiIA/80s-were-kinder-than-this-werent-they.html

Yesterday reminded me of how quickly time flies by. This morning I dug up a calender that my husband bought me for Christmas last year. It was still flipped open to April! Have we been so busy this summer hardly noticed what month it was? Apparently so. And apparently the girls of “Sex and the City” are filming a few flashback scenes for the SATC movie sequel. Can you believe we did this to ourselves? I never wore a pink bustier to elementary school but I certainly remember my letting my cousin Gina tease my hair for my first New Kids on the Block concert and wearing so many jelly bracelets up my arm, my acid wash jean jacket could hardly fit over my elbow. Now I’m digging out my fall denim again and looking for the perfect flannel to compliment my fall wardrobe. I guess some fashion never goes out of style. Just look at Carrie’s belt. Nina Garcia would call that smart shopping as it’s still the best accessory of them all.

Tips on Decorating Your Church Wedding

You have dreamed of this moment ever since you were a child. Now that the time has finally come, of course you would want everything to be as perfect as possible. However, it is important to know that having an extraordinary wedding is not that easy, as there is a multitude of things to consider and keep in mind.

One of the foremost things that you have to take care of is the decoration of the venue of ceremony. If you and your spouse have decided to hold the wedding ceremony in a church, then you have to decorate it in such a way that it would have a unique and special touch that is distinct to your wedding. Here are some tips on how to decorate the church for your wedding day.

First Things First

  • Inquire about your options – Before you do any decoration planning, you must first visit the church where you intend to get married and talk to the administrator so you will have an idea on what kinds of decoration are allowed.
  • Take note of important details about the venue – Take photos of the parts of the church and jot down essential information such as dimensions of the venue, number of church pews, size of the altar, and so on. This way, decoration planning would be much easier.

The Drawing Board

  • Set a budget – The budget is always a good place to start with the decoration planning, as some brides have the tendency to be carried way with the expenses. Allocate funds for different aspects of the wedding decoration such as the altar, pews, flowers, and aisle.
  • Decide on a unifying theme – The motif color of your wedding should be the color guide for the decoration. You may use other colors as well but be sure that they complement the motif color. As for the style of the decoration, it is best to follow the architectural style of the church.
  • Find a church decorator – For best results, you may want to consider hiring a church decorator for ideas, suggestions, and advice.

The Actual Process

  • Start with the altar – The altar will be the focal point of the whole ceremony so it is best that you reserve for this part the most elaborate and most gorgeous pieces of decoration. One of the best ways to decorate the altar is to adorn it with fresh flowers and beautiful candles. Of course, be careful not to over-do it because you would not want to get married in a forest of flowers or risk a fire hazard with too many candles.
  • Choose an aisle runner – The aisle runner is another important factor since this is where you would walk down. Aisle runners come in various colors but it is ideal to coordinate the color of the aisle runner to the bridal bouquet or the motif color of the wedding. You and your partner may also choose to have a custom-made aisle runner that bears your initials, your names, or your favorite love phrase. To complete the look, you can sprinkle some flower petals along the runner.
  • Decorate the pews – Make the church pews look gorgeous and elegant with floral bouquets, bows, or tulle.
  • Dress the other areas – For the entryway, some of your options include fresh floral arrangement, a floral wreath decoration (on the door), nice potted plants, pomander balls, tulle, and balloons. Balloons can also be used to fill up the ceiling with colors. This kind of decoration is ideal for churches with high ceilings.
  • Light up the church – As for the lighting, you can use candles to create a romantic glow and dreamy atmosphere. You can also utilize LED lights, which are fantastic to use for illuminating a floral centerpiece.

Creating a memorable church wedding decoration may be challenging and demanding, but once you walk down the aisle and you see the wonderful fruits of your labor, you would know that all your efforts are worth it.

Casual Pacific Northwest wedding in the San Juan Islands, images by Riso Studio

Rachel and Patrick are recent transplants to West Texas, and had been homesick for their Pacific Northwest roots, so when it came time to plan their wedding, a destination weekend up in the San Juan Islands was the perfect way to celebrate their new life together!  Their friends and family all joined them at the Roche Harbor Resort and spent the whole weekend soaking up the relaxed surroundings during perfect Indian summer weather.

Casual Pacific Northwest San Juan Island wedding , blue, cream and khaki wedding colr palette, images by Riso Studio

With a color palette of Pacific blue, cream and khaki they created a casual beach inspired wedding that matched the sea and sky around them. Rachel wore a dress from Cicada that Patrick’s sister had actually had custom made for her own wedding 3 years before, the bridesmaids wore dresses from Ann Taylor and Patrick and his groomsmen all wore suits and ties from Banana Republic. As they all got ready on the morning of the wedding, Rachel realized that her veil had been left back in Seattle- a 2 1/2 hour drive and 1 hour ferry ride away! Patrick somehow worked his magic and arranged for a friend in Seattle pick up the veil and deliver it to a sea plane on nearby Lake Union that was heading up to Roche Harbor. The veil made it’s way up to the island in no time flat, and Rachel was able to wear it for their photos. Incredible!

Rachel and Patrick had lots of time before the wedding to explore the island and all its stunning locations for photos with their dear friend and photographer Shannon from Riso Studio. The wedding ceremony itself was simple and sweet. Rachel was walked down the aisle by her grandfather, Patrick’s Uncle played the acoustic guitar, and a family friend acted as their officiant. “It was wonderful to have the family involved in that way. We could not have asked for a better ceremony.”

How gorgeous is this navy and pink wedding cake?! The talented Jennyfer Mancino from Sugar Suite (TheSugarSuite.com) created it using lovebird pottery as the cake topper and a coordinating bowl to separate the top tier from the rest — beats plastic cake columns and cheesy plastic figurines if you ask me.

We couldn’t wait to share the amazing ideas that Jessica and Tad whipped up for their wedding day celebration. We really fell in love with their Save the Date! Why? Because we literally took a stroll down all the big moments they spent together. Could those icons get any cuter? So personal. Totally creative. Unbelievably inspiring.
